A sneak peak of the samples I'm sending in this time. There's some naturally dyed Merino, I do all my natural dyeing using raw plant material I gather from around my home in the Welsh hills, with the onset of autumn I've put away the dyeing equipment until spring brings some fresh dye material, but the full size versions of most of these are still available in my shop. There's also mini samples of my handblended roving, and some pick n' mix batts.

I know we've got lots of new contributors this time round, so I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic box!

My Heart Exposed Yarns (round 14)

My two beautiful daughters Angelica, Imogen and I felt quite emotional making the natural dyes for the round 14 samples last month, picking various things from the garden to use and setting the dye vats on their way to transform into beautiful colours for you in the garden. Collecting the rain water to use for the painting was easy because for the first two weeks in August here in the north east, it didnt stop raining, we even had thunderstorms and brilliant clashes of lightening.

The hand painted samples pictured above are the last ones we can ever produce from our own plants here in the north east region of the UK because in just three weeks our family is moving to the south east, over 320 miles away and the new garden is completely bare of all vegetation so we'll be starting again almost from scratch. We are taking cuttings of our favourite dye plants in the hope these will continue to thrive but for now here are a couple of photos showing just a few of the special ingredients we used to make your Fibreholics sample :

As with all our fibres, each one has a purple ribbon with small silver heart charm attached as a little keepsake thank you from us for choosing our fibres, each one is individually wrapped in clear plastic wrap so you dont need to unwrap your fibre until you want to use it (unless your like me and cant stop stroking them that is).

There are four sets of colours in this round, I cant wait to see your photographs to see which one arrives in your samples collection.

For those of you living within travelling distance of sunny Kent, we will be hosting a meet up afternoon at some point just after Christmas, it would be very lovely to put a face to your name so if you can make it over to meet the MHE family that would be fantastic, make sure you join our ravelry group MHE Friends Group to keep a look out for the announcement early in the new year, I also post regular discount codes there so keep an eye on the discount message thread too.

The Next Round

I'm a new contributor for this round of Fibreholics and I'm just bagging up my fibres to send up to Carol so I thought I'd show you a sneak peek of what might be in your bag for the next round. I specialise in blends of fibres, some I blend on a hackle to make a length of roving that's really nice to spin because drafting is so easy. I also make batts, some in 100g lots, but I also do a merino, shetland, nylon blend (would be great as fibre for socks but could be for other things) in 35g batts to make 3 ply yarn with a different colour as each ply.

So here's what's going in-

Some smaller samples of rovings I've blended recently, some smaller batts, a couple of chunks of naturally dyed fibre, and some mini versions of my pick n' mix batts. The next round is due to go on sale at the start of September.

Well, there it was gone!

This round sold 40 bags in less than 24 hours - not bad going really. Some of these have gone to various places in Europe including Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, The Netherlands plus all over the UK and many were new to Fibreholics.

We only had petite fibre and yarn and really need to encourage more people to send in samples as there is definitely a requirement for bags of yarn and fluff!!

We have already discussed whether or not labour intensive mini skeins win over balls - not sure it really matters either way just as long as we get the samples in!!

Do you know of anyone who would be interested? The added bonus is that you get paid for every sample sold on top of getting your samples out to a wider audience.

Just to let everyone know that there will be a slight delay in the start of this next round - why? because it appears that the postman wants to keep all the parcel for himself (I suspect a closet knitter!) Since they closed the little sorting office at the back of the local PO and moved it to the nearest larger version things have never been right! One round I actually went and collected 17 bags from there - and no I didn't have a little red slip as they hadn't even attempted to deliver any of them.

So! The round will hopefully go live on the 7th of July but will keep everything updated re the release date!

Round 9 from My Heart Exposed Yarns : a loose theme for this round is Seasonal Movies so my teenage daughter Angelica and I have based the names for your fibre samples on one of our favourite movies "Back to the Future". Everything is included from Doc Brown's "Great Scott!", 1985 to the Clock Tower, a range of fibres, corriedale, falkland, super fine merino and my own personal favourite from the British rare breed of sheep Shropshire. I wonder which one you will enjoy in amongst your samples?

We had a lot of fun with these so hope you love your fibre too. Each one comes wrapped in a neat little parcel, a little silver heart charm attached to the plait inside which we give as a special little keepsake for you to say thank you for trying our fibres.

Round 8 Sneak Peek from Crafty 'n' Clothy

I used this round to have a play with some really bright colours. All dyed on a base of 100% merino 4ply sock yarn.

Bottom Row:

"Northern Lights" mixes bright pink, purple and orange as splashes of colour on the undyed yarn.

"Playground" is a bright mix of green, blue and orange

Top Row:

"Emperor" is a a mix of purple, yellow and green

"Candlelight" combines undyed yarn, shades of orange and scarlet.

Presenting "Funhouse" from My Heart Exposed Yarns naturally dyed, hand painted, soft Bluefaced Leicester 20g samples for the Fibreholics round 8 sample boxes.

This collection of sample sized fibres were all dyed at the same time using the same natural dyes for each, the resulting variation between the colours came as a complete surprise and was masses of fun to create, hence the name 'fun' as that is how my daughter Angelica and I felt at the time of creating these for you.

Each individual sample comes with its own label with purple ribbon and small silver heart charm attached which are a little keepsake from us as a thank you for trying our fibres.

Really looking forward to seeing these samples spun into your yarns, what ever you decide to create with them we hope you love them as much as we do.

Round 7 from My Heart Exposed :)

Round 7 arrived so quickly for me, in between the upstairs of the house being decorated, our youngest of six children Harvey turning the big three this week, spinning during the Tour de Fleece and lots of other general chaos, I thought I might have to skip this round but with the help of my beautiful thirteen year old daughter Angelica, between us we managed to get the samples ready and they are now on their way to Fibreholics for you to enjoy.

The theme for this round is "Summer Sun" so as this August is a bit special for me, I am celebrating turning 40 on the 6th, I thought I would do three lots of different fibre samples with artistic interpretations on the theme.

First we have 'Meditations' in extra

fine merino, subtle shades of lilacs, violets and pale sunshine; next we have "Summer Days of Fairground Fun" an exciting blend of sunshine pinks and turquoise; last but by no means least we have 'Golden Sands' a gorgeous woollen fibre from the British rare breed of sheep only found in the heart of England 'Shropshire' dyed in subtle dreamy golden sandy shades. Each sample comes with a small little silver heart charm for you to keep as a special keepsake from me so be sure to look out for these attached to the purple ribbon tied to the label.

I make all my natural dyes myself each one

taking three to five days to achieve then the fibres are dyed using a unique developing process to extract the colours from the liquids which takes a further three to five days. No harsh chemicals or irritants are ever used so the fibres are kind to your delicate skin and our environment.

Hope you love these samples as much as we have enjoyed creating them for you. I wonder which one you will receive, no two are identical so all are unique and very special :)

I finished cutting these little samples and sent them off. This round of goodies' theme is 'Summer Garden Party'...

Wild Berry and Sunset together remind me of the flowers in the garden.

Rainbow reminds me of the carnival colour bunting around the marquee.

Meadow reminds me of the tennis lawn beside the Marquee, while Lagoon is the colour of the lake we will boat on. Blaze reminds me of the fireworks we will finish the day with.

Happy Birthday Fibreholics, I feel very proud to be making a contribution to Box no : 6 for June 2010. This is the first time for me too so I am really looking forward to the boxes being sent out to all those lucky enough to buy one, I have followed the past few months sales with great interest and am always astounded how fast these boxes sell out.

From My Heart Exposed Yarns & Spinning Fibre, I have created "English Cottage Garden" spinning fibre from the rare breed of sheep bred in the heart of England "Shropshire" giving you an excellent staple length, beautiful fluffy next to the skin soft fibre which is luxurious to handle and a joy to work with. Only natural dyes produced directly from plants and flowers have been used, I never use harsh chemicals or irritants so everything is kind to the environment and your delicate skin. Any material used in the process of dyeing gets given straight back to our garden to make compost.

The samples of yarn are "Fern Gully" Tencelino Sock Yarn which is a gorgeous silky blend of 50% superwash merino and 50% tencel, the best of both sheep and plant worlds collide to give you a luxurious yarn that drapes exceptionally well and has a beautiful stunning sheen to it. Fern Gully is a delicate fern green colour almost jade green and very difficult to photograph especially as the yarn is so shiny.

The same as when you buy from my shop, every item comes with a purple ribbon with small silver heart charm attached, be sure to look out for these as they are a keepsake from me to you as a special thank you for choosing my creativity to work with. A few people are saving their little hearts up and are going to knit them into a project later, which I think is very special, what ever you decide I hope you enjoy your silver heart charm.

Spring samples from The Bear Necessities

Round 5 samples from The Bear Necessities, BFL/nylon sock yarn in Crocus and Parmaviolet. It's been such a cold spring here in Essex but the one thing you can rely on are the crocuses, they carpeted the roundabouts and verges here and even managed to flower in my decidedly soggy garden!

There are also two extra skeins of Crocus which'll be added to the shop. Unfortunately I'll be away for a few days over the Easter period but once the shop reopens, I'm offering free postage on all Fibreholics orders until the end of April. SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

The samples for round 5 are all in and there are some new contributors and some stunning colour combinations. Will try and post some photos - they just make you want to create beautiful things.

There will be 15 Voluptuous bags of fibre, 11 petite bags offibre, 11 Voluptuous bags of yarn and 15 Petite bags of yarn up for grabs. The newsletter could be going out with the information for the early buyers date and the official on sale date for every one else will be 1st April - with all bags being sent out the Tuesday after Easter.

Fibreholics will have been formed for nearly a year - perhaps we should celebrate and make the next round a birthday one!

September spun samples from The Bear Necessities

It's great that we're starting to see the samples from the boxes spun up already and here's another. I had a spare sample of the Peacock BFL left after sending mine in for the boxes so I spun it up and am really pleased with the results. Here's a before and after shot of the single I spun and the finished yarn. Before spinning it, I split the sample into quarters along it's length so that the colours would be repeated along the length of the single. I then I n-plied it to get a 3ply yarn and to keep the colour repeats. There's around 19m at 12 wpi and all in all I'm rather pleased with it.

Samples for the new boxes/bags have been sent and received :) Here are examples of the kind of batts I used to make my samples, although sadly I didn't take photos of the actual samples themselves. Must remember to do that next time :)

There isn't much in my etsy shop at the moment but I will be restocking once the kids go back to school so I'll be ready for the new boxes/bags going out after the 14th September '09. Commission orders are always welcome, examples of some I've done recently are available over on Flickr :)

I decided to send in a bit of luxury this time, Bluefaced Leicester and Silk. I hand painted three different colourways, I did intend forit all to be the 'Black Pearl' colourway but I didn't have enough of the dyes needed to produce it so 'Mauve Pearl' and 'Blue Pearl' came along too!

September samples from Sheepshape Spinning

September's Sheepshape Spinning samples (say that three times fast!) are all made of Bluefaced Leicester spinning fibre. Most of it is blue and white, with five of the "Peaches" colourway mentioned a few days ago and four lovely blue and red samples - it was very difficult breaking that one up for samples! If I have time before next weekend, when my dyeing equipment goes on its little trip, I may have to do another in that colourway for myself...

We'd love to get some feedback from our blog readers. Have you bought a Fibreholics box? If so, what did you think of it? If not, how can we tempt you into getting one? The purpose of the box is to get products from British independent artists into the hands of the public. We're always interested in better ways to do that!

I have had a lovely day today and can look out of the kitchen window and view a line full of newly dyed stuff - I am ahead of myself as I have already dyed, dried and packed my samples up and am eagerly waiting for the samples to come from everyone else. I will attempt to post some pictures later on.

The next round of Fibreholics boxes will be released on September 1st. All the contributors are busily making up their samples!

The contribution from Sheepshape Spinning will be all fibre this time. It's mostly Bluefaced Leicester, which is a lovely smooth fibre for spinning. Here's the fibre that I dyed today - click on the photo for a larger version. It spent a long time drying in the garden, thanks to the clouds today.

I dyed this fibre with orange acid dye but it came out a lot lighter than I had planned! I like the final shade though; it reminds me of ripe peaches. There will be four or five of these in the September fibre boxes. I'll also be sending in some blue/red BFL, some blue/white BFL and a couple of red/blue oatmeal shetland samples, if I remember correctly.

In the next few weeks you may see some changes to the blog and the box sale website. We're working behind the scenes to make things easier and more informative to you! Please feel free to make suggestions about what you'd like to see.

Well I've just got home after a lovely afternoon at the Skeins studio in Glossop, sorting through the beautiful yarns and fibres to make up each individual pack. There was so much lovely stuff there - I found it very hard to keep my hands off it.

I am absolutely certain that they will sell out really quickly, so remember - if you're going to Woolfest this weekend, make your way to the Skeins stall to get one from Carole, and if you can't make it, go to the Ecoproducts4u website (which is where you'll be able to buy them online when they go on sale) and sign up for the mailing list via the box in the bottom left-hand corner of this page.

My samples were posted a couple of days ago. I've sent an equal number of samples of two different colouways on oatmeal blue faced leicester. Unfortunately my photography skills were a bit lacking that evening and the photo is a bit blurry.

I love going to the local Post office - I don't even mind standing in the queue anymore as its been a pleasure to collect the parcels with all this yummy, squidgy stuff inside - I just wish it was all for me and no the lucky people who decide to buy. This is the photo of the 'main' skein, a new colourway I have designed.

This is called Horizon. It is painted half lime green & half navy blue giving a striking contrast, with long colour repeats. This colourway will not be available in Flutterby Creations until after the box is released, so if you get a a baby skein in your box, you will be among the first to ever receive that colourway!

These are my little skeins of Jazz it up! Proving to be a very popular colourway, this already can be brought, if you cannot wait until the box release.

I will be getting the rest of my samples photographed soon, ready for more temptation to be put in your path.

I've just posted my samples for inclusion in the first box.

I knew there would be a wealth of beautiful dyed fibres going in, so for contrast I've sent an undyed blend in a rather luxurious 60% chocolate brown alpaca, 30% creamy white merino and 10% rich honey tussah silk, these were very well carded together to produce batts that spin up into classy, semi solid heather yarn that has the best properties of all the fibres. The picture is probably a shade lighter than the actual fibre.

For my yarn contribution, I've sent some naturally dyed sock yarn in two shades. This is a good mix of 75% pure wool with 25% nylon for strength, and the shades this time are a solid light foxglove pink, and a gently variagated dove mauvey grey with palest clear pink.

I have loved doing this and spun up a spare sample not only to see the colour changes but so I can knit up a little something and maybe write a pattern to match my 'Sucky Thumb Mitts' pattern. Guess who is a lucky person - MEE!!! I am the one who is getting to see all the samples first as I am packing them all up and the first have just arrived - its going to be like Christmas. If we do a box sale every two months then we should have one starting November 1st which will mean they are a brilliant Christmas idea - well thats taken care of a few presents off my list!

Welcome to the new home of Fibreholics UK! We are a group of British fibre artists who are banding together to help promote our products and get them into the hands of British consumers. In the coming days, weeks and months you can watch us grow - and perhaps you will decide to try one of our sample yarn and fibre boxes!

We will be offering 200g boxes of handspun yarn and spinning fibre samples, in groups of 20g each from ten different artists in each box. We are currently aiming to have the first box available late this summer. Keep up on our progress here and also on our Ravelry group!
